Baby Development Envy

Dear first time mom,

Baby development envy is a real thing. You, thus, must acknowledge it and, then, fight it constantly. This fight is, particularly, important because you have spiritual authority over your baby. Therefore, instead of comparing your baby to another’s and wishing he/she reached development milestones as fast as so and so’s baby, you ought to be speaking God’s promises over him/her. You ought to be sowing God’s word in baby’s spirit in order that he/she may, truly, grow into the Godly offspring that the Lord seeks (c.f. Malachi 2:15).

You need to be persuaded that your baby is unique, special and highly esteemed by God so nothing about him/her is imperfect.

Look at the beautiful words of the Psalmist;

‘For You formed my innermost parts;

You knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I will give thanks and praise to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made,

Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it well.’

                                                                                     (Psalms 139:13-14) AMP

I know you may rationalise comparison, sometimes, by thinking that you’re just making sure that as early as possible, you catch any development delays/challenges that may be a sign of conditions like autism- But, my dear, being keen about your baby’s development is different from running around looking for concoctions for baby to drink so that he/she can sit at four months like the neighbour’s baby did or walk at nine months like you heard your workmate’s did 🙂

Take it easy mama baby :-). Every child is different. As long as baby reaches a milestone within the time-frame in the table below; baby is just fine!

Milestone Normal limit
Social smile 4-6 weeks
Head holding/control 1-3 months
Turns towards the origin of sound 2-3 months
Extend hand to grasp toy 2-3 months
Sitting 5-9 months
Standing 7-13 months
Walking 12-18 months
Talking 9-24 months

I also encourage you to speak the promises below over your baby’s life as often as you can- preferably daily- and then, leave the rest to Jesus.

You are a great nation, your name is great,

You are blessed, you are a blessing,

Blessed are those who bless you, cursed are those who curse you,

All the people of the world shall be blessed through you.

May the Lord God of your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, increase you, 1000 times and bless you as He has promised.

May the Lord bless you, may the Lord keep you, may the Lord make His face shine upon you, may the Lord turn towards you and give you peace.

You are the head and not the tail. You are the top and not the bottom. You are the first and never the last.

In Jesus’ Name!

As I close this post, allow me to congratulate you on attaining SuperWoman status :-). You carried a human in your body for nine odd months and then endured the pain that preceded baby’s entrance into the world. Bravo! 🙂 🙂 🙂

May God richly bless you with grace to be the kind of mother that your baby needs.

With Love and Joy 🙂
